1st Place, International Architectural Award
On October 27, 2011 at the 20th anniversary of the CEMEX International Building Awards held in Monterrey, MX, Casa Sisal was selected from 3 finalists in the Mexican “Single Family Housing” division as the 1st Place winner and then went on to compete against the winners from other countries where Cemex is represented. This prestigious award is bestowed on the architectural project that best represents the innovative use of concrete, architectural design, respect for the environment and execution. It was a surprise to us all that this highly regarded International jury of architects chose Casa Sisal as the 1st place winner in both the National and International categories.
CASA DE MAQUINAS
Hacienda Sac Chich was one of the most amazing places I have ever stayed!
The rooms were all comparable to top notch hotels. The room I stayed in had a very comfortable king sized bed with plush white linens. The building itself is incredible because of the historical significance and yet, it still maintains a modern feeling. The property provides a very relaxing atmosphere. I really enjoyed walking the grounds and taking pictures of all the beautiful flowers and lush shrubbery. We went during the summer (July) and while during the day it was hot, the infinity pool was never far away. The town itself is close enough to feel like your not alone. The hacienda is also distant enough to feel like you are in your own private world. We took side trips to the pyramids and cenotes (underground pools) on the weekend and everything was close enough that getting to attractions was not a problem. I highly advise anyone who is looking for a place to rent to pick Sac Chich! The experience I had was one of a kind and unforgettable to say the least. Date of Stay: 2/10
We had a truly unforgettable 30th wedding anniversary celebration at Sac Chich! Exquisite style and attention to detail make this beautiful home a luxurious destination. We look forward to returning again soon to relax at this lavish refuge and to explore more of the fascinating Yucatan. Date of Stay: 10/08
Hacienda Sac Chich is the perfect antidote
to cookie-cutter vacation resorts. This property is one of a kind–absolutely unique and breathtakingly beautiful. You’ll be living in the hacienda culture that dominated the Yucatan more than a century ago, but you’ll have contemporary comfort and design blended into the architecture of the industrial revolution. There are too many unique places and spaces to describe–the pool, the rooftop, the sunken lounge in the master suite, the bocce court, the loft, and the utterly spectacular guest rooms in the new building. If you can drag yourself away from the hacienda, there are plenty of fascinating side trips to cenotes, Mayan ruins and colonial cities such as Merida and Valladolid. But whether you explore the region or stay on the grounds, this will be one vacation you’ll never forget. Date of Stay: 2/10
For anyone who is looking for a unique vacation
far from your typical Hyatt Resort – look no farther. Experience the real Mexico in an exquisite environment that blends traditional architecture with modern amenities. From the moment you arrive you understand that you have been transported to a very special world. We just returned from the hacienda where our group of 5 friends enjoyed a “ladies only” birthday vacation. We each had our own bedroom and bath but spent most of our time poolside with margaritas in hand – made with the freshly squeezed lime juice. But the hacienda owners also guided us to a host of memorable experiences throughout the region including exploring Mayan ruins, cooling off in a Mexican cenote, and visiting the lively city of Merida. This is a wonderful place for any occasion but a very special place for a special occasion. Date of Stay: 6/09
As you drive the five miles or so off the main road from Merida or Cancun (HWY 180)
passing through a few small Yucatacan villages, you immediately start to relax.
You see the simple way people live, the children running around playing, the school children in uniform gathered around a store during a break, and lots of women walking about on their daily missions. The countryside seems a million miles from the traditional, hectic US life. And that is just what we were after. As you enter the tiny town of Sac Chich you arrive at the Hacienda through iron gates and into a tropical paradise. Soco and Bartola, the domestic help, are there with shy smiles and fresh tortillas, guacamole and salsa waiting for us. But where to go to eat them??? Shall we go to the rooftop and listen to the birds and catch some sun? Or should we go to the pool, or sit by the water gardens or in the loggia? Or stay right in the kitchen, cooled by soaring ceilings and cool breezes through the French window? These are the types of dilemmas you are up against. And at every meal!! The hacienda itself is an amazing estate…the gardens, the interior with its high ceilings and antique henequen machine equipment, the bedrooms with lovely linens, the pool, the loggia, the indoor sitting area, the rooftop lounge for viewing the sunset…it’s all so great. Cyndy and Howard have thought of everything and were so helpful with maps, rides from the airport, local information. Another thing we love about Hacienda Sac Chich is its proximity to so many great places to visit. There is a ton to do/explore if you wish. There is a great little town about a mile away called Acanceh, population about 4,000, that has great taco stands, a morning market, a clinic, home-made coconut ice-cream (that alone I would travel thousands of miles for)…just about anything you need. We walked into town in the cool of the morning and took a “pedi-cab” back to the hacienda with our market wares. So fun and so charming. Our kids loved it. The other thing I would travel thousands of miles to see again were the hundreds of lightning bugs that lit up the grasses and trees right after it got dark. If you walk through the loggia gate looking towards casa sisal (a super cool, modern house on the property) and let your eyes adjust to the immense dark a few seconds you will see them! And then soon the frogs come out to sing/scream! Date of Stay: 3/10
Dreams in full color come true
Arriving late, much of what we were about to discover was still under wraps with the night. As we unloaded our traveling bags we felt as though we were travelers of yesteryear. Majestic walls, windows and doors that have opened and closed for hundreds of years were now at our touch. We entered with eyes wide open. Vaulted ceilings, spacious rooms, candlelight and low mood lighting greeted our overwhelmed faces. This place was more than we had asked for. We dropped everything in our rooms and just wandered the palm gardens under the canopy of stars. Sleeping was easy for the trip was a day’s work and the beds were better than my own at home. Birds singing and flowers so fragrant I knew we had made the best choice. The staff was like family. They made every day worthwhile. We were why they came to work and they were why we were so able to rest and relax. The location is great. It’s a hub for visiting the Ruins or the Convents, but I just wanted to spend every day on the grounds with the fauna, flora, the pool and the hammocks. You must stay here. Date of Stay 1/08
Words can not describe the luxury and relaxation that is awaiting you at Hacienda Sac Chich.
Words can not describe the luxury and relaxation that is awaiting you at Hacienda Sac Chich. I went on a girls trip to Merida and this home exceeded our expectations. The property and accommodations were exceptional. The home is beautiful and well maintained with secret treasures all over the property. After spending the day sipping margaritas by the pool we would move to the roof where we could watch the sunset or out onto the lush property to watch the fireflies flicker with breath-taking beauty. When we had our fill of relaxation we would go into town to get freshly made tortillas and authentic Mayan cuisine or we would take a day trip to see the Mayan ruins and swim in the underground water caves (cenotes)! The owners were beyond wonderful-super helpful and kind. I highly recommend this property-you will have an unforgettable experience! 3/14
Hacienda Sac Chich is one of the best places I have ever stayed!
Located 40 minutes from the Merida airport it is easily accessible. Sac Chich offers a luxury experience in the heart of the Yucatan with easy access to the surrounding sites, such as the city of Merida, off the beaten path cenotes-where you will be the only one exploring the water caves, Mayan ruins, outdoor markets, and exploring the local scene. You can ride a bike to pick up freshly made corn tortillas and frozen fruit bars. The property houses spacious bedrooms with queen/king beds and individual bedrooms. There are small ponds full of lily pads and frogs, palm trees, and nothing but green surrounding you. You will have a pool all to yourself that is perfect for sipping freshly made margaritas and reading a book. There is a roof top to watch the sunsets, bocce ball, a field full of fireflies at night and a great sound system, in case you want to have a dance party. Everything is clean and well taken care of. The owners are more than happy to supply you with where to shop/dine, the best keep secrets of the area, maps with directions to everything and any other help you need. Staying here we had privacy, quiet, comfort, easy access to exploring and a place that felt like we had a home during our vacation. There is nothing negative I can say about my stay here. I would highly recommend Hacienda Sac Chich to anyone who is looking for a cultural Mexico experience. 3/14
Hacienda Sac Chich is the most awe inspiring place I have been to
Exotic singing birds, lush plants, phenomenal food, refreshing pool, lounging areas and a great sound system; that can be linked to different areas of the house; star-gazing platform on the roof to watch the sunset and the stars; privacy. It is located perfectly for day trips to cenotes, ruins, the beach and the city, but feels like a complete escape from it all behind the limestone walls and under the royal palms. Spending time here was the trip of a lifetime. A real thinking place. 3/14
We didn’t know what to expect and it was an adventures trip!
I would recommend everyone to experience Yucatan while staying at The Sisal Residence. We requested breakfast every morning which was delicious and chef we hired to cook for us dinner was outstanding too! Cynthia will give you everything you need to know even the places to visit.11/2017
We loved our stay at Casa Sisal!
Cyndy and Howie were very nice and helpful and the staff was kind and welcoming. Cyndy arranged for her staff to cook breakfast and dinner for us every day which was delicious and a lovely way to immerse ourselves in the local culture. They also laundered our clothes before we left which is a huge help when traveling with small children. Our three kids enjoyed splashing in the pool and loved the owner’s sweet dog Eva. We made two side trips–to a local ruin and to a fabulous nature reserve a few hours away where we saw literally thousands of flamingos. I highly recommend this beautiful home and hope to visit again some day. 03/2017
We stayed at Casa Sisal for four nights in November.
This was part of a trip around the world we are on and came at the end of two wonderful weeks in Mexico. After several stays in fairly average hotels (travelling budget!), arriving at Casa Sisal was the most wonderful experience. The house is exactly as it appears in the photos and is part of a larger estate with the most beautiful gardens and renovated Hacienda. Our three girls were immediately in the pool shrieking with glee. We were welcomed shortly after our arrival by Howard who was warm, friendly and incredibly helpful. Having familiarised ourselves with the house, we started to think about cooking supper…just at this point the wonderful Bartola walked up the long, manicured garden bearing in her arms a welcome gift of freshly baked- still warm from the oven – plantain bread. We devoured it within minutes and soon forgot about cooking supper! The rest of our stay was equally as relaxing and enjoyable. We made several trips to the surrounding area. The highlights for us being the ruins at Mayapan – we were the only ones there which was an amazing experience after the crowds at Tulum ruins and Coba; Seeing flamingos for the first time and a crocodile at Celestun and arriving in the local village to buy provisions just in time to see a parade taking place with a fantastic and wildly out of tune band playing. Howard kindly gave us a guided tour around the rest of the estate which was fascinating. The staff are all super friendly and helpful. Everyone smiles and we were made to feel extremely welcome – even with three very loud daughters. The magic of Casa Sisal is to be discovered at dusk but I won’t spoil the surprise. We didn’t tell our children and what they witnessed will I’m sure stay with them for the rest of their lives. I can’t recommend this place enough. It was magical.07/2016
Wonderful time after a roundtrip through Mexico
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
We stayed for 10 days at Casa Sisal at Hacienda Sac Chich in early September. We enjoyed the quietness, the feeling to be in nature there, the places nearby and to live in an outstanding design object. Cyndy and Howie as well as William and the staff made everything comfortable, so we could enjoy the hot days in the pool, the frog sound in the evenings and the light of fireflies when it gets dark. Merida is close, with a lot of fantastic possibilities for food. Uxmal and Chichen Itza are 1h away, Mayapan only 30 min. Enjoy the cenotes around … it is amazing to swim there. But the best is the feeling, when you come back to Casa Sisal after all these activities 09/2016
Casa Sisal – Beautiful stay!
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
A group of girlfriends and I vacationed at this beautiful guest house for 5 days. We were all so impressed with the design of the house and grounds, the level of refinement and finish were incredible. The staff were all very kind, and William in particular helped us arrange a day trip to visit the best cenotes in the area. The location is great for days trips in the area, and also close/far enough from Merida to enjoy the downtown scene. Cyndy and her husband Howie were also incredibly welcoming and offered us a tour of their neighboring Hacienda. All together a perfect stay for groups or couples! 04/2016
Casa Sisal – Exclusive Contemporary Country Home
Magical ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
My family and I were overwhelmed by the beauty and perfection of the hacienda and casa sisal! The pictures are amazing and yet do no justice to just how perfect the place is. I rarely write reviews but we had a truly exceptional stay and appreciated each and every corner and detail. 03/2016
If you want to be away from everything
Sometimes pictures can make things look better than they are in reality (working myself in marketing, I have seen this dozens of times). But even though the pictures of Casa Sisal are extremely beautiful they don’t compare with the reality of being there, nothing but silence, a private garden larger than a football field just for you, and the home made Yucatecan food from the lovely ladies of the Hacienda Sac Chich staff. I still wonder why people would prefer a five star hotel to a private residence? Probably because they haven’t experienced this. Great for a romantic escape or to enjoy with your family by the pool. Can’t wait to go back again to Casa Sisal.Date of Stay: 12/2012
I can only echo previous reviews when I say that the pictures don’t even begin to do this property justice. Both Casa Sisal and the Hacienda itself are jaw-dropping, and even after 5 days we kept noticing little details in the house that were just perfect – its architecture award is richly deserved. The gardens, lighting and setting are also magnificent – I honestly can’t think of a single thing that was not just wonderful.
Cyndy herself is interesting, funny, warm and a mine of information – she has also found the perfect balance between being a great host – and leaving you in complete privacy when you want it. The staff also deserve a special mention, in particular Javier, as they too manage to be helpful and efficient, without being remotely intrusive. Many hotels could take a leaf out of their book!
We loved the house, the pool, the area, the setting and miss the ‘disco lawn’ (worth being by the pool at sunset with a cool drink for that!) – I would return there in an instant, and can’t recommend it highly enough. 4/2014
My (recently new) fiancé and I stayed for a week at Casa Sisal after stumbling upon it online while planning our Mexican holiday from Australia. We were both immensely blown away with our experience at Casa Sisal. I would highly recommend (and have been) staying here. Cyndy, the owner is very kind and aims to please. I coordinated with her to plan the surprise proposal for our engagement during our stay at Casa Sisal. it couldn’t have been planned any better and Cyndy was very helpful in arranging everything we needed prior to arrival. She arranged a beautiful table with flowers and candles and recommended a great private chef. An unforgettable night. Right from the front gate, the perfectly manicured grounds, the house, the location and the facilities are amazing. The house has everything you need to stay comfortable as if you had never left home. Although it’s location is not right in town, travelling by car is easy and a fun adventure. It also makes it easy to see other towns and sights in the area. Maps and guides of the area made by Cyndy are also very helpful. Honestly, we have never been to such an amazing getaway in all our travels and will definitely be a returning, even all the way from Australia. 10/13
My friend and I just returned from 4 amazing nights in Casa Sisal.
We had spent a few days in Merida, and the trip to the country was a fantastic counterpart. As you enter the grounds, beautiful landscaping and nature surrounds you. At the center of it all is the contemporary designed house, which exceeded the already high expectations we had before we arrived!
The days were warm and relaxing and magical fireflies lit up the grounds as twilight began. Cyndy’ suggestions for daily outings were interesting, tasty, and offered many insights into the history and local culture of the region.
The caretakers, Bartola and her sister Soco were very warm and helpful and they cooked us an outstanding regional meal, which I highly recommend. We had a great time communicating with them using an iPhone language translation app!
We can’t wait to return with additional friends in the near future. 1/14

Spending time here was the trip of a lifetime. A real thinking place.stayed in Casa Sisal for four nights with our three year old son for a short getaway in Yucatan. We found the house because of its proximity to Merida, numerous cenotes around and also Umxal. It is located in a real mayan village 20 mins away from Merida. Part of hacienda san chich, an old sisal estate back to the heyday when yucatan is the world center of ropes. The property is very special as a contemporary guest house built with a ultra modern style but also pays homage to mayan traditionl architecture such as using chukum for both interior and exterior finish. With fine taste and attention to details, the house is designed with a lot of intelligence, aesthetics and integrity. It is extremely visually pleasing, very spacious and practical for tropical climate. The software in the house is upscale with most things one would need for short stay. There is no TV but a DVD. so if you travel with kids, you may want to bring some kds DVD. We don’t watch much TV, so no problem for us. Bottom line is we as architecture lovers, we enjoyed the house thoroughly.
Location wise, I think its a lot better than Merida centro. Its more authentic and rustic. The staffs are very friendly and are lovely local people, but they don’t speak much English, so the guest should be aware of this and find way to do the basically communication. But in a way, its part of the charm traveling there for us.
The only thing that we hope is better is the hot water. It is not very hot or consistent, but because its pretty warm there, it didn’t bother us much. Internet is a bit shaky but works fine for the most hours, just little things one has to deal with in a little village.
Cindy the owner is great in communicating even though she is not there but she is helpful. 2/14
First off this is the first time I have bothered to review a holiday accomodation and secondly I am not entirely sure I want to share this gem with anyone else. But in the spirit in which we were received by the most gracious hosts of Casa Sisal I feel duty bound to take the time to give credit where it is due. The property itself is of course stunning. Look at the pictures. It does not disappoint in the flesh and nor is it photographed omitting noisy neighbours or ugly views. Secluded, subtle and an oasis of peaceful calm. Most previous reviews mention the fireflies on the lawn of an evening. I now understand why. Impossible to put into words or indeed film or photograph. What most don’t mention is the incredible calm of early morning there. Very special. Good architectural fore thought meant my family of five ‘lived’ easily in this space. The space works very well. Location wise very convenient for Merida and the week barely gave us time to scratch the surface of all the sites within day trip distance. The Hacienda itself is of course stunning and a great contrast to the clean lines of Casa Sisal. Utterly genuine honest hosts who are as enthused by the houses as we were. A rare find and a true ‘keeper’. 4/13
Stunning villa near Merida
We really enjoyed our stay at Casa Sisal a couple of weeks ago. The house is absolutely stunning and very comfortable with all you could want. Only wish we had stayed longer than 3 nights..! Date of stay: 2/13
Design in paradise….
The house’s pictures attracted us and when we arrived at Casa Sisal, what a shock! It was even better! The combination of the luxuriant nature, the old walls around, the grass so green and this beautiful design house was magic! Everything in the casa and outdoor was well thought and it was great to live there!
The caretakers were helpful and so kind, they made our stay easier.
Casa Sisal isn’t so far from Merida, and it’s very pleasant to come back home, after walking in this crowded town, to enjoy the peace of the house. the country around is beautiful, with many old deserted sisal factories to see and cenotes to go swimming.. Our stay in Casa Sisal was a fantastic experience!!!! We’ll come back! Sure! Date of stay: 8/13

Casa Sisal is Stunning
My wife and I flew into Cancun from Milwaukee. After meeting our son, his wife, and their thirteen month old son at the airport (they flew in from New York City), we rented a car. The three hour drive via the toll road was pleasant and there was only light traffic. We stopped at a toll road service area for cappuccino and a rest room break. The coffee shop was called “Italian Coffee” and was similar to Starbucks.
Casa Sisal is stunning! The pictures and owner’s description are very detailed and accurate. Having said that, it was even nicer in person than we expected. We swam in the pool every day and enjoyed the two acre yard for Frisbee, etc. The staff was very helpful. We arrived to chips and homemade salsa as well as freshly baked banana bread. The house is large and well equipped. Everything that we needed was there for us. They even provided a “porta-play” type crib for the baby. The house served as a unique place to hang out as well as a base for nearby sights and activities. Within a 30 to 60 minute drive there are many Mayan ruins, cenotes, haciendas, convents and historic towns. We went to Merida (we liked Paseo Montejo which is a beautiful boulevard with old mansions); Cuzama Cenote (sadly we only had time to see and swim in one of the three cenotes there); the seaside town of Progreso (disappointing compared to Playa Del Carmen or Tulum); the nearby Hacienda Teya (we had a very nice lunch). We were only able to stay 3 nights at Casa Sisal and wish we could have stayed longer. Date of stay: 1/12

Casa Sisal – Living the dream
Casa Sisal is an architectural masterpiece and without doubt the most incredible place we ever imagined staying! Amazingly when we arrived it was even more astounding than we thought possible. Everything about the property and gardens was completely effortless. Everything was where you wanted it to be if you had designed it specifically for yourself! The kitchen, sunken lounge area, pool, bedrooms and huge open windows all set off by the elegant and stylish furnishings. Around every corner is another interesting view or stunning vista. This alone would have made our honeymoon stay unforgettable. However, we also had the incredible service and attention from Cyndy (the owner – accessible remotely from about 3 months before we arrived to a fortnight after!) and the ladies and gentlemen who prepared our food, kept the house spotless and the gardens effortlessly manicured. The location is also perfect for exploring the area, though, once you arrive it is almost impossible to leave the house.. Finally I actually cannot believe the incredible value of it. We have paid 4 or 5 times this to stay in places that will not hold such as happy place in our heart as Casa Sisal. Date of Stay: 7/13
Casa Sisal was a highlight on my tip to Mexico.
Surrounded by an incredible garden the unique architecture of this house with all its amenities offers recreation on the highest level. Cynthia is a great host. Even though I had some problems with the airbnb android app and there were only hours from booking to arrival, Cynthia patiently helped to get everything fixed.
Thanks a lot!
Cynthia was a great host, Casa Sisal was amazing, in a quiet place, beautiful and very comfortable. We liked the swimming pool a lot, many thanks for the employees, they are very helpful and nice 😉 It was a great pleasure to spend 4 days around Merida, it couldn’t have been better.

The authentic and magical Mexico! ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This was my 4th visit to Hacienda Sac Chich and if I thought it was amazing before, I was blown away by it now. The owners have continued to refine this property, going to any and every length to ensure its authenticity, beauty, and comfort. Their eye for the artistic and dramatic offer a feast for the senses. I tried to snap photos for social media bragging rights, but I could never do it justice.
On this particular trip we were 4 couples for a 5-night getaway and it couldn’t have been more perfect. Based on the owners recommendation we had an exceptional dinner in nearby Merida, we hired a wonderful massage therapist to come to the hacienda for a few treatments, we visited nearly a cenote a day – each one more wonderful than the next, climbed the Mayan ruins, and were thrilled at our good fortune that there was a festival/rodeo/bullfight right in their little village the weekend of our visit! But mostly, we just enjoyed this magical place with our big decisions each day being which pool to dip in, which location to watch the sunset from, and what kind of margaritas we would serve at happy hour.
If you need to escape the stresses of life, turn back time, rejuvenate – this is where you need to be. And just in case you’re not able to fully shut off the outside world (full disclosure – that includes me) they do have wifi ; ) Date 6/16
“AN ABSOLUTE DREAM”
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
We had our wedding at Hacienda Sac Chich—it was an absolute dream. We stayed across the lawn at Casa Sisal while some close friends stayed in Casa de Maquinas, where we made mezcal cocktails, dipped in the pool around the clock, and dozed off on the star gazing platforms during the clear, hot nights. The house is beautifully restored from an 1860s henequen plantation with beautiful industrial details intact, of which the 85-foot chimney is mereley the largest. The bedrooms are airy with high ceilings, and each is beautifully arranged with mostly custom furniture—especially the master bedroom in the more newer side of the house, with its sunken settee and private plunge pool.
Cyndy, Howie, and the staff were not just warm and attentive hosts but were easygoing in response to the sundry needs that came up surrounding the wedding. We had their staff prepare a delicious dinner (across the firefly-covered lawn at Casa Sisal) and a wedding-day brunch of fruit plates, chilaquiles, and mimosas under the loggia. We also had our reception in Casa de Maquinas’ dramatic courtyard; the kitchen proved a great place for our caterer to set up.
The hacienda is near the small village of Acanceh, as well as a number cenotes and ruins—but we couldn’t bring ourselves to leave the grounds. Mérida, the nearest city, is about 40 minutes away and full of fantastic markets, restaurants, and bars (as well as beautiful places to stay for our other guests).
We daydreamed about visiting Hacienda Sac Chich before we were engaged, then dreamed about it throughout our engagement—but from the moment we drove through its gates it exceeded those dreams. It’s a truly special place run by truly special people, and we can’t wait to visit again. Date 5/16
Historic Luxury Hacienda with Sumptuous Design
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Most people think of the beach for a Mexican vaycay. But there is nothing like the Yucatan for an authentic and truly unique experience. This review of Hacienda Sac Chich requires some history to put the property in context though, so… For almost 100 years, Merida, the capital city of the Yucatan, was the richest city in the world– thanks to the hefty production of henequen (hemp). Wealthy Spanish families used native Mayans as slave laborers, to plant thousands of hectares (1 hectare = about 2.5 acres ) of henequen plants, harvest the leaves and then produce rope, sisal (named for the Mexican shipping port “Puerto Sisal”) or “green gold” as it was later called. These hard-working plantations, demanded gigantic buildings: casas de maquinas (houses of machines) to shelter huge machines brought from Europe, as well as elaborate haciendas for the owners’ weekend use. Once nylon entered the market in 1920, all of the gorgeous structures were quickly abandoned. Today they appear everywhere as heaps of rubble consumed by the jungle, unless… you happen to be Cyndy and Howard Berger, who some 13 years ago, recognized the beauty and potential of one such place: Hacienda Sac Chich. Over the past 14 years– I have visited Sac Chich 6 times in all seasons, and every time it gets better. Every room is a work of art, with hand-made furniture and traditional woven fabrics. The beds and baths are luxuriously simple and complete. And the gardens! The palms and plants are full of birds, and lovely water features are everywhere– including a beautiful private pool. The entire property is incredibly private within a very bustling village and a magical place for a romantic getaway, family or group gathering, or destination wedding. A wonderful Mayan family has worked for them for years, and the food is traditional, (handmade corn tortillas and salsas daily) and delicious. Or you can shop and cook on your own. There are fascinating places to explore throughout the entire area: cenotes, (deep clear and cold freshwater pools) other haciendas, (rubbled or renovated), Mayan ruins (small and large– Uxmal is about an hour’s drive), Merida– a magnificent Colonial city, and if you really must get to a beach, you can drive to many that are much less crowded than the Mayan Riviera south of Cancun. What I and most people find though, is you really don’t want to leave Hacienda Sac Chich once you arrive. I can’t recommend this property highly enough. 5/16
It was unforgettable!
Dear Cyndy – Thank you, thank you, thank you! Thank you for hosting Katherine’s 64th birthday celebration at Sac Chich.
Entering Sac Chich that first afternoon was like walking into a dream, into a work of art that went beyond anything I had ever seen in photos or imagined. I was struck first by the pathways, the rock walls, the ancient tall structures so full of history that you can literally feel it. Then the sound of water and the soft breezes hit me, curtains swaying softly to reveal an expanse of lawn and at its end a modern architectural wonder – Casa Sisal. As you and Katherine toured us around the property dropping off guests in their bedrooms I was stunned as I took in the beautiful old doors, the paint colors, the windows in each room, the ultra cool and modern bathrooms, the beautiful wooden beds, the tiled and traditional kitchen, the pools, the plants and constant birdsong. And everywhere you have thoughtfully placed the perfect touch of art, or flowers, or antiques. Both the Casa de Maquinas and Casa Sisal have such comfortable elegance and simple, clear beauty. Sigh.
And you are not done, you are creating and adding and making it all better all the time.
Patty and I loved our room and our very special round tower bathroom outside the big double doors. Sleeping with the sounds of the frogs ( yes I love that froggy roar), water splashing, and waking to the jubilant dawn chorus of birds was such a pleasure. Every dip we took in the pools was liquid refreshment for body and soul, especially late at night when the swimsuits came off and we entered liquid light.
I see us all at the big table enjoying a meal, out at Casa Sisal having margaritas and guacamole, on the rooftop enjoying the sunset and then running in from the rain.
I will never forget the chilaquiles, the musicians, or the fireflies. And I have two adorable little tequila cups to remind me always of this joyful journey. The tequila will be gone soon, of course.
Thank you for helping Katherine plan and present this whole event. Her friends were all a delight and it was great to see how much they care about Katherine and how much they enjoyed you and all you did for us! I was touched by seeing the closeness between you two and so happy to have the opportunity to be with you after so little contact in recent years. Really, you managed our whole visit there with such grace, generosity and delight!
And I thank you for your love and friendship! Please be in touch when you touch base here in the next week or so.
Thank you for inviting me into your magical world of light, sound, taste, touch, texture, smell, a feast for my senses, and a hacienda full of friendship and celebration to fill my heart! 4/16
